The best Rolex GMT homage
For years the GMT was the one complication you could not get cheap — a fourth hand meant serious movement money. Then Seiko put the NH34 GMT movement on the open market and the affordable field got real overnight. Every watch here has a genuine, independently-set 24-hour hand; what separates them is build. Here are the four worth owning, ranked on our fidelity rubric.
The movement part, first
Three of the four run the same Seiko NH34 — the automatic GMT that made this category exist at these prices. That is good news: it means the movement is a solved problem, and your money buys case finishing, bezel quality and bracelet instead. The exception is Steinhart, which charges more and spends it on a Swiss GMT movement. Decide whether the movement's passport matters to you and the ranking sorts itself.
1. San Martin SN004-G GMT — the best overall
About $340. The community-favourite mid-tier GMT, and the highest-fidelity watch in the field on our rubric (87). Tighter finishing and a slimmer 39mm case than the budget set, 200m of water resistance, and the NH34 doing its quiet work inside. If you want one GMT homage and no second-guessing, this is it. Carried on Amazon, often a little cheaper direct.
2. Pagani Design PD-1662 — the value benchmark
About $115. The homage that made Pagani Design famous: a real NH34 GMT, a ceramic Pepsi bezel and a jubilee bracelet for close to a hundred dollars. The bracelet and QC are where the price shows, but nothing else at this money gives you a genuine GMT complication. This is where most people should start.
3. Steinhart Ocean One GMT — the Swiss step-up
About $560. The one watch here without a Seiko movement — Steinhart fits a Swiss GMT calibre (ETA 2893 / SW330 class) and backs it with dive-grade 300m water resistance in a 42mm case. Fidelity is high (86) and the movement is the step up the price implies. No affiliate program and no Amazon presence — Steinhart sells direct, and we link it honestly.
4. Addiesdive Pepsi GMT — the cheapest real GMT
About $110. A genuine NH34, a ceramic Pepsi bezel and 200m water resistance in a 39mm case, for the least money in the category. Finishing is budget-tier and the fidelity score (80) reflects it, but as a first automatic GMT or a travel beater it is almost unreasonable value. Carried on Amazon, often cheaper direct.
Prefer the Explorer II look?
