The best Datejust homage
The Datejust is the easiest Rolex to imitate badly. A fluted bezel and a jubilee bracelet are cheap to stamp, so the look is everywhere under $100 — and almost all of it is built at 40mm, which is not what a Datejust is. The original is 36mm, and that single number is what separates a convincing homage from a watch that merely has the parts. Here are the three worth knowing, ranked on our fidelity rubric.
Read the case size before anything else
The reference is the 126234 at 36mm. Of the field we track, exactly one homage is built at the original's size — the rest run 38mm and 42mm, because that case tooling is cheaper and more widely available. An oversized Datejust-alike with a perfect fluted bezel still reads as a different watch: the dial furniture is stretched, the jubilee links look thin against the case, and the whole thing sits like a sports watch rather than a dress watch. Our rubric weights case and proportions at 25 points for this reason, which is why the size-correct option wins here despite costing four times the budget pick — and why the ranking below is not the price order.
1. San Martin SN0058-G-X — the best overall Amazon ↗
From about $326, fidelity 85. The one that nails the proportions the original is known for — 36.5mm and just 11.9mm thick — and it pairs them with a genuinely better movement than the budget tier: a Swiss-class PT5000 or Sellita SW200 rather than a Seiko auto. The bezel is carved rather than stamped, the bracelet is a five-link, and 100m water resistance is more than a dress watch needs. If you want a Datejust homage you will still wear in three years, this is the one, and it is usually cheaper direct from San Martin than through resellers.
2. Cadisen C8053 — the value pick, and the closer one Amazon ↗
About $80, fidelity 76. Cadisen's own catalog calls this one a Datejust, and it is the cheapest watch here by some margin: fluted-look bezel, cyclops date and a sapphire crystal on a Miyota 8215 automatic. What earns it second place over the Pagani is 38mm — still two millimetres over the original, but close enough that it wears as a dress watch rather than a sports watch. Water resistance is 50m, and Cadisen offers dial and gold combinations the budget tier rarely bothers with. Finishing is honest budget-tier; see the Cadisen brand review for the QC caveats.
3. Pagani Design PD-1645 — the most watch, the least Datejust Amazon ↗
About $125, fidelity 72. On paper it is the better-equipped watch: a fluted bezel offered in two finishes, jubilee bracelet, cyclops date, sapphire, and a 100m rating that beats the Cadisen's 50m. The problem is the case. It is built at 42mm against the original's 36mm, and six millimetres is not a detail you stop noticing — it is the difference between a dress watch and a sports watch wearing dress-watch clothes. Buy it for the specification, not for the proportions. See Pagani Design, model by model.
