The best Rolex Explorer homage

The Explorer is the easiest icon to get wrong, because almost everything about it is restraint — a black dial, 3-6-9 numerals, no date, no bezel. There is nothing to copy except proportion, which is exactly what most homages miss by wearing 39 or 40mm. Five watches in our database, ranked on our fidelity rubric.

Stock reality, checked 28 August 2026: the two highest-fidelity entries here are both hard to buy. The San Martin SN021-G was sold out in every variant on San Martin's own store, and the Pagani PD-1751 was sold out on Pagani's. The Addiesdive pair and the Baltany are the live ones, and the AD2035 is what we would actually buy today.

Why 36mm is the whole argument

The modern Explorer (ref. 124270) is 36mm. That is small by current taste and it is the point — the watch reads as a tool watch precisely because it does not fill a wrist. A 40mm black-dial three-hander with 3-6-9 numerals is not an Explorer homage; it is a field watch that happens to share a dial layout.

This is the one category where the cheap watches often get the important thing right and the expensive ones do not. Every entry below is 36mm.

1. Addiesdive AD2035 — the best you can actually buy Amazon ↗

About $150, fidelity 82. A genuine ST2130 automatic — a Swiss-architecture movement rather than a Seiko or Miyota — under a sapphire bubble crystal, at the correct 36mm. In stock on Addiesdive's own store at our 28 August check, which is more than the two highest-scoring entries here can say. The bubble crystal is a vintage flourish the modern Explorer does not have; that is the main place it departs.

2. San Martin SN021-G — highest fidelity, hardest to buy

About $299, fidelity 86. The best-finished case and bracelet in the field and the closest dial, which is why it still scores top. Sold out in every variant on San Martin's own store at our last two checks, so it is a watch to wait for rather than a recommendation today. Usually cheaper direct from San Martin.

3. Baltany S4056 — the one the brand itself calls an Explorer Amazon ↗

About $220, fidelity 76. Worth noting for a reason that has nothing to do with the watch: Baltany's own product page titles it an Explorer homage, which is unusually direct first-party attribution in a field where most brands describe a shape and let you infer. 36mm at 12.2mm thick with sapphire and Swiss Super-LumiNova. See Baltany, model by model.

4. Pagani Design PD-1751 — the value benchmark, when in stock Amazon ↗

About $180, fidelity 76. The familiar Pagani proposition — right proportions, sapphire, a real automatic, finishing a tier below. Sold out on Pagani's own store at our 28 August check. See Pagani Design, model by model.

5. Addiesdive AD2515 — the $79 entry Amazon ↗

About $79, fidelity 72. Right size, right dial, quartz — a Seiko VH31 with a sweeping seconds hand, so it looks mechanical at a glance and ticks four times a second rather than eight. It needs a battery. For a first homage or a beater that will not hurt to scratch, that is a reasonable trade.

FAQ

What is the best Rolex Explorer homage?
The Addiesdive AD2035 at about $150 is the best buyable one — ST2130 automatic, sapphire, 36mm. The San Martin SN021-G scores higher but is sold out.

Why does 36mm matter?
The Explorer is a 36mm watch. At 39 or 40mm it stops reading as an Explorer and becomes a generic black-dial field watch.

Is there a cheap one?
The AD2515 at about $79 — right size and dial, but VH31 quartz rather than automatic.
